But many children do not feel any pain or discomfort.

Causes of oral thrush in infants.

▪️Oral thrush is caused by an overgrowth of a yeast (a type of fungus) called Candida albicans.

▪️Most people (including infants) have fungi in their mouths and digestive systems, which is considered a normal development. Usually a healthy immune system and some “good” bacteria control the amount of these fungi in the body.

▪️But if the immune system is weak (due to illness or medications such as chemotherapy) or is not fully developed (as in children), Candida in the digestive tract can grow excessively, leading to infection. Candida overgrowth also causes diaper rash and infection. Vaginal yeast Babies can have oral thrush and diaper rash at the same time.

▪️Oral thrush can also occur after a child is given antibiotics for a bacterial infection because antibiotics can kill “good” bacteria. Oral thrush can also occur after using steroid medications.

complications of oral thrush in infants.

The infection is usually transmitted to the mother’s breast during breastfeeding, causing pain in the nipple and cracks in it, in addition to deep stabbing pains in the breasts. The fungi may also move from the mouth to the pharynx, esophagus, and intestines, causing diarrhea and lack of food absorption. The fungus may move to the anus, causing scaling of the skin around the anus under the diaper (diaper dermatitis).

How is oral fungus treated?

▪️Oral thrush is treated by applying antifungals (nystatin or fluconazole) directly to the white spots, or given orally to treat infection in the digestive system and intestines for 10-15 days, and diaper dermatitis is treated using nystatin ointments.

▪️The cracked nipple of the mother is also treated by applying nystatin ointments in addition to the use of restorative ointments, and the treatment of the infant and his mother must be started at the same time so that infection does not occur between them.

▪️In the event of severe and stubborn cases of oral fungus treatment, it is necessary to consider the presence of a weak immunity in the infant.

▪️Depending on your child’s age, the doctor may also suggest adding yogurt with lactobacilli to your child’s diet. Lactobacillus is “good” bacteria that can help get rid of yeast in your child’s mouth.
