Southeast Asia (Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor Lester, Vietnam, Christmas Island, Cocos Islands)

Southeast Asia is located north of Australia, south of East Asia, west of the Pacific Ocean, and east of the Bay of Bengal. It encompasses several island and archipelago nations that stretch between the northern and southern hemispheres, making it the only Asian region located on both sides of the equator. Southeast Asia is politically divided into 15 countries and territories: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor Leste, Vietnam, Christmas Island, Cocos Islands.

_Brunei :

The country of Brunei is located along the northern coast of the Borneo Island in Southeast Asia. It is situated both in the Northern and Eastern hemispheres of the Earth. Brunei is bordered by the South China Sea in the north and on all other sides by Malaysia. Brunei is divided into two non-contiguous parts by a portion of the Malaysian State of Sarawak. Brunei shares its maritime borders with China and Malaysia.

Brunei is a small country that covers an area of 5,765 sq. km (2,226 sq mi) on the island of Borneo. It has a 161 km (100 mi) coastline along the South China Sea.Brunei is divided into two non-contiguous territories that are separated by the Malaysian State of Sarawak.

_Cambodia :

Cambodia is located in the southern portion of the Indo China Peninsula in Southeast Asia. It is situated both in the Northern and Eastern hemispheres of the Earth. Cambodia is bordered by three countries. It is bounded by Vietnam to the east and southeast; Laos to the northeast and Thailand to the northwest. Cambodia is bounded by the Gulf of Thailand to the southwest.

Cambodia occupies an area of 181,035 sq. km in mainland Southeast Asia.

_Indonesia :

The archipelagic nation of Indonesia is located just to the north of Australia and off the Southeast Asian mainland, between the Pacific and Indian Oceans. It is placed across the Equator and hence is geographically positioned both in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres of the Earth as well as the Eastern Hemisphere. It is bordered by Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, and Timor-Leste. It is surrounded by the Indian Ocean in the south; by the Pacific Ocean (South China Sea) in the north, and over a dozen regional seas. Indonesia shares its maritime borders with India, Australia, Palau, Singapore, Philippines, Vietnam, and Thailand.

Covering an area of 1,904,569 sq. km, and strategically positioned between the Pacific and Indian Oceans, Indonesia comprises over 17,504 islands and is by far the largest and the most varied archipelago on Earth. Of these islands, the larger islands of Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan (which comprises two-thirds of the island of Borneo), Sulawesi, and Irian Jaya are quite mountainous.

_Laos :

Laos is a landlocked country situated in Southeast Asia on the north-western part of the Indochinese Peninsula. It is located in the Northern and Eastern hemispheres of the Earth. Laos is bordered by five countries. It is bounded by Myanmar and China to the northwest; by Cambodia to the south; by Vietnam to the east and by Thailand to the west.

Laos occupies an area of 237,955 sq. km in the Indochinese Peninsula in Southeast Asia.

_Malaysia :

Malaysia is a Southeast Asian country located in the Northern and Eastern hemispheres of the Earth. The South China Sea separates Malaysia into two regions: Peninsular Malaysia (West Malaysia) and East Malaysia. Peninsular Malaysia is a part of mainland Southeast Asia and lies in the southern part of the Malay Peninsula, bordered by Thailand. The states of Sabah and Sarawak located on the northern edges of the Borneo Islands forms the East Malaysian region, and are bordered by Brunei and Indonesia. West Malaysia shares its maritime borders with Singapore, Indonesia and Vietnam, while East Malaysia shares it with Philippines and Vietnam.

With an area of 329,847 sq. km, Malaysia is the 66th largest country in the world.

_Myanmar :

Myanmar is a Southeast Asian country. It is situated in the Northern and Eastern hemispheres of the Earth. Myanmar is bordered by the Indian states of Mizoram, Manipur, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh and by the Chittagong division of Bangladesh in the northwest; by Tibet Autonomous Region and Yunnan province of China in the north and northeast; by Laos in the east and by Thailand in the southeast. Myanmar is bounded by the Andaman Sea in the south and by the Bay of Bengal in the southwest.

Myanmar (formerly Burma) occupies an area of 676,578 sq. km in the northwesternmost part of mainland Southeast Asia.

_Philippines:

Positioned on the western edge of the Pacific Ocean, along the Ring of Fire, The Philippines is the 2nd largest archipelago in the world, with over 7,641 individual islands.  It is geographically positioned both in the Northern and Eastern hemispheres of the Earth. The Philippines is surrounded by the South China Sea to the north and west; by the Philippine Sea to the east; by the Celebes Sea to the south; and by the Sulu Sea to the southwest. The Philippines shares its maritime border with Indonesia, China, Japan, Palau, Malaysia, Vietnam, and Taiwan.

Covering a total land area of 300,000 sq. km, the Philippines is an archipelagic nation located in Southeast Asia.

_Singapore :

Singapore is an island country located off the coast of the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula in Southeast Asia, between the Indian Ocean and South China Sea. It is located in both Northern and Eastern hemispheres of the Earth. In fact, Singapore is just one degree of latitude above the Equator. The country borders South China Sea to the east, the Strait of Malacca to the west, and the Riau Islands lie to the south.

With an area of only 725.7 sq. km, Singapore is one of the world’s smallest countries. This island nation comprises of one main island and over 60 smaller ones.

_Thailand :

Thailand is a country located at the center of the Indo-Chinese Peninsula in Southeast Asia. It is located in Northern and Eastern hemispheres of the Earth. Thailand is bordered by five countries. Myanmar to the north; Laos to the north and east, Cambodia to the east, and Malaysia to the south. The Gulf of Thailand and Andaman Sea lie to the south and west of Thailand respectively. The country shares its maritime borders with Vietnam in the Gulf of Thailand in Southeast; and Indonesia and India on the Andaman Sea in the Southwest.

Thailand covers a total area of 513,120 sq. km in the Indo-Chinese Peninsula. The country has a varied landscape ranging from low mountains to fertile plains to sandy beaches.

_Timor Leste:

Timor Leste/East Timor is an island country in the Eastern Lesser Sunda Islands, at the southern extreme of the Malay Archipelago in Southeast Asia. Timor Leste is the only Asian Nation to be completely located in the Southern Hemisphere. Its territory covers the eastern half of the Timor island. It also includes an exclave on this island’s northwestern side that is bounded by West Timor of Indonesia. It is bounded by the Wetar Strait in the north and the Ombai Strait in the northwest. The Timor Sea bounds it to the southeast and Western Timor of Indonesia to the southwest. Australia is Timor Leste’s southern neighbor. The Timor Sea separates the two countries. Timor Leste also controls the islands of Oecusse, Jaco, and Atauro.

It is a sovereign country with a total area of ​​about 15,007 square kilometers.East Timor also includes several islands such as Aturu and Jaco. It also has the Ambino enclave on the northwest coast of Timor Island.

_Vietnam :

Vietnam is situated in Southeast Asia along the eastern coast of the Indochinese Peninsula. It is located in the Northern and Eastern hemispheres of the Earth. Vietnam has land borders with three countries; China to the north, and Cambodia and Laos to the west. The Gulf of Tonkin with the Island of Hainan Dao (China) lies to the northeast of Vietnam. To the south and east, the country is bordered by the South China Sea, and the Gulf of Thailand lies to the southwest.

Located in the Indochinese Peninsula’s eastern edge, Vietnam covers an area of around 331,211.6 sq. km. The coastline of mainland Vietnam is about 3,260 km long. The country also includes several islands.

_Christmas Island :

Christmas Island is one of the seven external territories of Australia. It is located in the Indian Ocean, approximately 960 miles northwest of the mainland Australia and covers an area of 52 square miles. Christmas Island has a population of about 2,000 people with the majority of the people living in settlements on its northern tip. Several languages including English, Malay, and different Chinese dialects are spoken on the island.

_Cocos Islands:

West Island is the capital of the Australian territory of Cocos (Keeling) Islands. The territory constitutes two atolls in addition to 27 coral islands of which only two are inhabited namely Home Island and West Island. The term Cocos denotes the plentiful coconut trees which form a dense jungle in West Island as well as in some other islands.
